

Best Practices in Leveraging Diversity and Building an Inclusive Classroom

Upon completion of this comprehensive and engaging course, you will be able to:
- Review the peer-reviewed research literature on the benefits of applying diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) principles in the classroom
- Discuss how to use the University Design for Learning (UDL) approach to leverage diversity in your teaching methods
- Build an inclusive syllabus with accommodations to support diverse learners
- Use the Intercultural Competencies Framework to integrate diverse perspectives into your curriculum
- Implement culturally-responsive teaching methods that foster belonging
- Identify and overcome 6 common barriers to the equitable access to learning resources
- List the key benefits of Open Educational Resources (OERs) for students and teachers
- Implement Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
- Adopt fair and valid assessment and grading schemes which avoid unconscious biases
- Describe the unique classroom experiences and effective inclusion strategies for 7 historically marginalized groups (incl. racial/ethnic minorities, biological women, LGBTQIA+, international students, first generation college students, neurodivergent students, and adult learners)
- Explain what Title IX is and what it covers
Instructor

Charlyn Hilliman, PhD currently serves as Chief Diversity Officer & Vice President of Academic Enrichment and Learner Support at Capella University. Former Dean of the School of Public Service Leadership and Faculty Chair for Capella University’s public administration degree programs, Dr. Hilliman previously held leadership positions at both Columbia University as well as Florida International University. Dr. Hilliman holds both a PhD and Master’s in Criminal Justice from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), as well as a Master of Public Administration from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In addition to now serving on Capella’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) and as a scientific merit reviewer, Dr. Hilliman also serves on several community boards, including Alliance of Youth Development, the Destiny Baptist Church Board of Trustees Community Liaison, and STABLE Community Services, a social services agency. Her research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Biomedical Informatics and CIN: Computers, Informatic, Nursing.
